The Woods of Terror

Sometimes the best haunts are the ones you stumble upon while traveling, and The Woods of Terror ended up being one of the biggest highlights of our 2026 haunt season!

We were in North Carolina to surprise my mom and decided to make a little detour after hearing so much about The Woods of Terror through Tampa Jay's YouTube channel. Needless to say, we're SO glad we did.

Let's start with the good stuff: THE SETS. Holy smokes. The attention to detail throughout this haunt is incredible. The set designs are some of the best we've experienced, and I cannot stress enough how important it is to LOOK UP and LOOK ALL AROUND. There is so much happening beyond what's directly in front of you, and you'll miss some seriously impressive details if you're only looking straight ahead. For this reason, I also think it definitely has annual or at least bi-annual repeatedly.

The mazes themselves were fantastic, the themes were fun, and the scares absolutely delivered. I was genuinely screaming, which is always a good sign that a haunt is doing its job. Honestly, this was some of the most fun I've had at a haunted attraction in a LONG time. We walked away talking about how much we loved it, and that's really what a great haunt experience is all about. Dreadful Danny highly recommends the 3D glasses add on purchase, it made the first sets of walk throughs REALLY fun and really trippy. He loved that part!

There were a couple of logistical hiccups worth mentioning, though. Our biggest frustration was with the Fast Pass experience at the main entrance. It didn't seem to offer much of an advantage there, and the entrance logistics felt a little disorganized. We also didn't realize that the midway area was only accessible before entering the haunt. Once you go through the entrance, you can't return to that area, which was something we really wish had been communicated more clearly (or communicated at all). A little more signage and upfront information would go a long way in making the experience smoother. We also don’t understand why you have a QR code but then need to stand in line at the ticket office to get a physical ticket. That felt clunky and outdated and just frustrated everyone around us in line.

As far as the individual mazes go, Strangeland (based on the Dee Snyder movie) wasn't really our favorite. It just didn't feel like a theme we particularly needed to see brought into a haunt in 2026. But that's a relatively small critique in an otherwise fantastic lineup.

Overall, The Woods of Terror absolutely delivered. Between the incredible set design, entertaining themes, and genuinely effective scares, this is a haunt we'd recommend to anyone looking for a seriously fun and frightening night out. The actors were on their game, and having a great time in character.

We're so glad Tampa Jay put this one on our radar, and if you're anywhere near North Carolina during spooky season, put The Woods of Terror on your haunt bucket list. Just remember: look up, look behind you, and take in ALL those details. You won't regret it!

Final verdict: One of our favorite haunt experiences in a long time. We came for the scares and left absolutely raving about it.
